Silk and paisley

"Crazy for Paisley" "The Teardrop explodes". From Laura Ashley and pyjamas to Haider Ackerman, Stella Mc Cartney, Jil Sander and Jonathan Saunders. All left their imprints on this eccentric and sartorially ironic trend. If you ask me it always brought to mind old British artistocrats and their full on swirling shaped print handkerchiefs, or cheap 80's ties but as always, I found myself inprisoned by fashion regime. According to Dan Coughlin at the Paisley museum the shape was first seen in Mesopotamia and it is evocative of a pine cone which is a symbol of fertility there, or according to others the shape is simply the imprint of the heel of the hand when curled into a fist. Well, pretty interesting and all but whatever happened to me and I suddenly fell for this grandpaish sofa cover that at best I ignored and mainly disliked? I guess I'll blame it on my 90's grunge youth or even better ar River Phoenix's hippy shirts. Either way, I put on my shouty silk pants paired it with my old paisley cotton blouse walked out the door and teased my own long-established penchant for minimal. Yay!

Butterscotch Minty

Today is like one of those days that the "Writer's block" rushes in. Actually not. It would be untrue and arrogant to use that term. I can write but what is actually left to say about butterscotch mint? It's such a popular and familiar combination in cupcakes, ice-cream and brownies. So since the candy world has been caramel and mint coated, I thought Spring fashion outfits could benefit from a likewise delicious color pairing. Thus, I dressed in my  sacharine smile, put on my minty happy blouse, dipped my tan leather jacket in caramel and off she goes to "Keep the Aspidistra Flying" in search of Gordon Comstock to help him complete his Magnus Opus. :P

Bring flowers in last month's newspapers.

"Call the roller of big cigars,
The muscular one, and bid him whip
In kitchen cups concupiscent curds.
Let the wenches dawdle in such dress
As they are used to wear, and let the boys
Bring flowers in last month's newspapers.
Let be be finale of seem.
The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream..."

The Milky Way

I’ve always liked white. Absence of color, dim presence, crisp and minimal. Maybe that’s why I’ve also enjoyed drinking cold milk. It provided sort of relief.  At summer nights I was sky gazing with my dad as he was making stories about interstellar dust. That hazy white light of the galaxy mesmerizing in its radiant stelliform glow; and it wasn’t long before Eels “Daisies of the Galaxy” became the tune I was restlessly humming in my head during dark blue nights. “I'll pick some daisies from the flower bed of the galaxy theater while you clear your head I thought some daisies might cheer you up” I’m still that person a true follower in the alabaster direction of the galaxy towards the brightest constellations. My fiancé says that if one looks carefully at the shape of elegant peplum flaring at the waist of any stellar girl, inclined about 60 degrees to the ecliptic, might easily mistake it as a rocket aiming towards the sky rising high when the moon is below the horizon. That’s my milky way, a heart-melter of minimalism within an avant-garde dream.

"Everything That Rises Must Converge"

There are times that come in our stylistic pursuits when “The impossibly Cool” must be accomplished. Whether that will happen through a token gesture of imitating any given trend or through sourcing fashion taste with our personal integrity is a whole different story. Street taste-makers portrayed in the digital world such as Tamu Mc Pherson, Hanne Gaby Odiele or Elena Perminova strike our fancy with their individuality and unique transformative abilities obviously endorsing the second afore mentioned premise. “Now where do I stand?” We’ve all tried to take sides. No one wants to be called fashion-victim or a stale copy of fashion editorials at the very least. But who do we kid after all? There’s no “parthenogenesis” of ideas. We all abide by the seasonal pre defined fashion notions and there’s simply no escape as the route is designated of yore. I’ve already accepted that truth, objective to my eyes, and simply try to emulate Ulyana Sergeenko’s axiom: “Wait three seasons before wearing anything off the catwalk”. Now of course there’s room for exception for Celine or Chloe and cases like today. Official Spring sunlight and adventurous demeanor calls for day-glo acid lime which inadvertently adorns subversive editorials and high-street shops alike. Am I contradicting myself? It might be so. That’s exactly what fashion does too. Who am I to spoil the fun? ;)

"Believe in People. Straightforward, Openminded."

Feeling as a self-conscious"screenwriter" of an event taken place only some hours ago, I can only turn it into a script coming adrift from the guiding constraints of stern reality. It might have been the merry company of the hosts Mariza, Anna Eleni, attending ladies (Lemoncake, All You Need is StyleNiko) & gents (Sotiriswho charismatically orchestrated the camaraderie and exuberance which evolved into a dreamy fairy world of spring cotton purity, pastel flower buds and tribal kaleidoscopes. Or it might have been the narrative, so naturally effortless entitled H&M Conscious and Fashion Against Aids. What is certain is that both chapters were versatile, sustainable, easy to read, and purely cool. From starched recycled cottons and sculptural peplums, chromatic tribal prints to Eskimo folklore - for maximalists and minimalists alike, white and colorful served as the blank canvases on which last night's fairytale was played out. Being the afore-mentioned writer and all, I have to admit that my demand for art and quality can never be satiated and yes I found just what I needed in the eco and skin friendly pure cotton which gracefully banished  toxic polyester thoughts.

But hey! Fashion Against Aids awareness is a fashion cause worthy of mention! Making a concerted effort to be more mindful of the implications, the protagonist of just about any drama, fable or poem can endeavour to be committed possessing a genuine and responsible approach and keeping all the cool-set aesthetic. Macramé, featherweight African print bomber jackets, non toxic inks, ombre shirts and cut-offs, hip and fun Maori inspired accessories all acting as subcontext in the stream of anyone’s consciousness.

Oh, that interior monologue always replacing normal narrative keeps haunting me but I cannot ignore the protagonists in the setting. The props and the context can never be enough. What one needs for a successful story are the protagonists: Mariza, Anna, Eleni. The ladies made it worth it. Polite, gracious and spirited. “Glitterati of character” as I like to call persons who encompass substance and finesse. However, it is not fated to give a suspense or tension in this story. Always have and always will be a fan of anti-climax in literature and life alike. The perfect whole was welded in the feeling I got as I closed my eyes before sleep sunk in and I can tell you it was heartfelt good.
