Céline Fall 2012

Roaming around the endless Fall Winter collection images, I decisively stepped into my own private safe zone called "Céline". I thought it would be another classic -evocative of the house- fashion show. But I heard it wasn't. Phoebe Philo asked for intimate and who am I to argue with the winner of 2011 CFTA award designer? The two small showroom presentations set my pen on fire utilizing adjectives as sculptural, clean, voluminous, chic, femasculine, sporty, controlled, sophisticated, witty, refined, precise, minimal, and tailored. The collection could be a narrative the first chapter of which we have read in the Pre-Fall and now the plot is set in motion in the speed of the literary term "Initiating Incident". Strong geometric elements, puffed up sleeves, rounded shoulder lines, ankle cropped pants, even more inflated coats, bold accompanying the monochrome, soft leather detailing all played out in a subtle intentional manner that the "reader" is required to infer in an appropriate judgment or assessment of the storyline. Philo's "omniscient" point of view as the narrator, affects our sense of the emotional meaning of the story-collection and I simply deliver exposition with access to my inner thoughts and feelings. So the ending to the story is an open one. A denouement that does not fully resolve all the elements implicitly raised. An ending that is left exposed for subjective interpretations and ambiguous insights. What remains is my first-person narrative inhabiting the minimal world by instinct, mentally walking through the rainy city scape in my boxy black leather jacket being voluminously elegant and desirably complicated. Céline thank you for the adventure.

And thank you for a beautiful review of this collection! I always expect great things from Phoebe Philo and once again I'm staring at these images hoping that the structured coats and trousers would magically appear in my wardrobe...
